In my sketching class, students not only learn to sketch but also create concepts. As they improve, they take selfies with their work and share them with me. I then create videos based on their artwork, incorporating elements from their sketches to inspire further creativity.
The Importance of Motivation Over Competition
I do not believe in competitions. Instead, I encourage students through challenges like:
10 Sketch Challenge
30 Sketch Challenge
50 Sketch Challenge
The goal is to focus on progress rather than comparison. When students work on improving their previous work, it fosters a healthy learning environment. This step-by-step improvement reduces pressure and promotes peace of mind.
The Power of Art as Meditation
Art is not just about drawing; it’s a way to practice patience and focus. Many students struggle with pressure—whether from studies, work, or other responsibilities. By engaging in sketching:
They learn to be present
They develop problem-solving skills
They cultivate patience and decision-making abilities
I consider art a form of meditation, helping students refresh their minds from stressful routines.
Learning is a Journey, Not a Race
Many people today lack time to truly absorb knowledge. They seek quick results, ignoring the depth of learning. However, true improvement happens gradually:
The first 10 drawings may not show major improvement.
By the next 10 drawings, students start adapting techniques.
Around the 15th to 17th drawing, noticeable progress begins.
After 4-5 months, a significant transformation becomes visible.
Overcoming Challenges in Learning
When starting something new, initial enthusiasm is high. However, as challenges arise, motivation dips. This is where mentorship and support are essential. Whether in art, education, or work, seeking guidance from teachers, friends, or mentors can help overcome obstacles.
Final Thoughts
Improvement is not about rushing to complete a course or earn a certificate. It’s about gaining real benefits from learning. Many students stop when they face difficulties, but the key is to take the next step and push forward.
