Completing the July 100-Sketch Challenge was an exhilarating experience that pushed my creative boundaries and strengthened my passion for sketching. Today, I'm excited to share the highlights of this journey and offer some insights for fellow artists embarking on their own sketching adventures. #100sketchchallenge #sketchbook
How I Completed the Challenge
The key to my success in the #100SketchChallenge was consistency and preparation. By dedicating my free time to sketching and having all my references ready, I could maximize my time spent on actual sketching. This method not only saved time but also allowed me to focus on refining my skills.
Tips for Beginners: Here are a few tips that helped me during the challenge and might benefit those just starting out:
Stick to Your References: When you begin sketching, choose your reference and stick to it. Avoid the temptation to constantly change your reference material. Consistency is crucial for steady improvement.
Keep Your Tools Handy: Always have your sketchbook and a selection of pencils with you. I prefer using colored pencils for character sketches as they add a vibrant touch to my work.
Review and Improve: After completing a sketch, take a moment to review it. Focus on small, incremental improvements rather than aiming for perfection from the start. This approach will help you grow steadily without feeling overwhelmed.
Focus on the Process, Not the Outcome: Don’t worry too much about how the final sketch will look. Overthinking the outcome can hinder your progress. Embrace the process and enjoy each sketch as a learning experience.
Emotional and Skill Growth
One of the most rewarding aspects of the #100SketchChallenge was noticing the emotional and skill improvements that came with regular practice. Each new sketch added to my focus and ability, making the entire journey incredibly fulfilling.
To keep the challenge enjoyable, I avoided putting pressure on myself to finish quickly. Instead, I allowed myself to have fun and experiment with new methods and techniques. This approach not only made the process more enjoyable but also led to some surprising discoveries that I'll be sharing with my students in upcoming character sketching classes.
